KUNSÁG

The Kunság wine region is our home, this is where we work day by day. It is only natural, that we take every opportunity to talk about it. The character of our wines is determined by the grapes and the natural conditions surrounding our vineyards. Let us take you on a brief tour of the Kunság wine region!

Where we are

Kunság is the largest wine region in Hungary, part of the Alföld wine region. Situated between the Danube and Tisza rivers, the total area under cultivation is over 100,000 hectares, of which 18,359 hectares are planted with vines. Soltvadkert, the home of our winery, is located in the middle of the wine region. It is also the largest wine-growing town in the region.

Climate

The high number of sunshine hours is of particular importance for the climate of the wine-growing region. The continental climate manifests itself in hot summers and cold winters. The main challenge is the limited rainfall; frosts, which used to be a serious risk factor, are becoming less frequent.

Soils

In terms of topography, the wine-growing area is mainly flat. The most common soil types are sandy soils, which vary in composition. In addition to calcareous sands, there are loess loams and alluvial meadow soils. Some areas are richer in humus and nutrients, and the grapes grown here are the ones we use to produce our premium wines.

Grape varieties

Grape varieties of Hungarian origin play a major role in the wine region. With Irsai Olivér, one of the most popular domestic crossings in the country, our winery was among the pioneers to launch it as a bottled wine, and today there are many other Kunság wineries who followed suit. In addition, Generosa and Cserszegi Fűszeres are also of particular importance to us. The old, historic variety Ezerjó, which enjoys protected designation of origin status in Soltvadkert both as a still wine and as a sparkling, is also worth highlighting.

Wine style

In the Kunság wine region every wine lover can find his or her favourite style of wine, as there is a wide range of wines from light whites, fresh rosés to full-bodied reds, not forgetting sparkling wines and late harvest sweet wines. However, it is undoubtedly the light, refreshing whites and rosés that are most often poured by Kunság wine lovers. This style of wine is characterised by a predominance of clean, fruity aromas, freshness and moderate alcohol content.
